Access Spike Traction Device

The Black Diamond Access Spike Traction Device straps to hiking shoes and boots so you can trek trails with icy sections a lot easier. Like crampons, the Access features stainless steel spikes to assist with traction. Unlike crampons, the Access weighs less, packs better, and accommodates shoes and boots for longer trails with icy, non-technical terrain. It's perfect for treks as grand as the Grand Teton, where there's more mileage on rocky terrain than icy, but there's still the occasional apron full of ice to navigate from time to time.

Best traction devices on the market

I have about a dozen of these traction devices between all the different models. The are the best ones i have found and i keep extras to loan to friends. I get a couple sizes to fit my barefoot shoes up to my extreme cold weather boots. The Access Spikes are the best all around do it all. The pro and ultra light ones are good for more specific uses. I have used the ultra light ones on some 14ers and they work great, you just need to remember to walk on your forefoot on ice.

Best pair of micro spikes I’ve ever used

Had some old cheap spikes that would constantly slip off, pegs would come loose. These have never once fallen off my shoe, and the traction is perfect

Great Traction on Ice

It has been an icy winter in MA, so these have been great for walking the dogs and staying upright.

The Webbing Loops are the Best

The webbing loops make it easy to take them off when my hands are cold. I also like the light weight. When they get worn, sharpening with Dremel tools could extend their life. I switched from Kahtoola’s (heavy!) five seasons ago and never went back. They’re great and I just bought my third pair.

Decent. But not as good as the distance spike.

I have used the distance spike for years as my primary spike for trail running and mountaineering. It was easily the best spike in the market. However, now that the distance spike is discontinued, I decided to switch to the access spike. The access spike is good. It does the job. However, it does not stay in place as well as the distance spike. When running in the snow, the access spike can shift sideways on the front of the foot. The distance spike did not do this. So I have this a 3 star when compared to the distance spike which gets a 6 out of 5 stars.

Great traction

These fit my shoes and boots great. Have good traction and aren’t big and clunky like other brands. Plus they pack up smaller than other brands I’ve used

Make running and hiking on ice fun

I love my access spikes. There’s snow on the ground from October to June where I live, and I run in these more often than without. They make runs over icy terrain or even just a recently plowed icy road doable without slipping.
