Why We Like The Black Diamond Pursuit FLZ Trekking Poles

For a little assistance on the ups and down of our next ultra, we hit the course with the Black Diamond Pursuit FLZ Trekking Poles in hand. With an adjustable shaft and interchangeable baskets and tips, this pair lets us stride with a customized setup. The aluminum construction holds strong through heavy use yet still feels light to combat fatigue, while the cork grip manages moisture, and its foam extension gives us added security on steeper climbs. Just a single pull will lock the pole into place, while the single push of a button will collapsed it back down, letting us keep pace as we make our way to the next aid station.

Here's what customers have to say

The trekking poles are generally well-received, with customers praising the lightweight, compact, and adjustable design. Many find the poles provide good stability and support on various terrains. However, some users have experienced issues with the locking mechanism and durability, and the adjustment range may not suit taller individuals. Overall, the poles appear to be a good choice for many hikers, though a small number have had problems.

Poor quality control, button immediately broke

The very first time I used these poles, the small button that locks the poles in the extended position fell out of one of the poles and couldn’t be fixed. This was on day one of a 3 day backpacking trip, so the useless pole became dead weight for the rest of the trip. Based on other low reviews, it’s clear that other people have had the same issue with these poles. BD needs to step up their quality control, at this price I would expect a durable pole that lasts longer than one day of moderate hiking.

Perfect for Alpine Trail running!

Yes, they are slightly heavier than the running-specific Z poles, but I am not doing any ultras anytime soon so these have been amazing for my short alpine pursuits.

Older version

I have an older version of this pool and love the cork grip, new strap, and extended foam grip. I like the concept of these very compact poles for travel but find that they rattle no matter how tight I make them. And eventually, because of that looseness, I think the metal at the joint wears. I would only buy flick locks in the future.

Hiking Help

The poles are light weight, fit nicely in your hand and definitely add to the hiking experience. I have found them especially useful on terrain that is full of tree roots and rocks, river crossings and muddy, slippery ground. I am 5’7”, the s/m are the right size.

Appear to be of good quality and as presented on Web pg.

As stated above, I think they will work well, but found they require strong hands to deploy, as the locking sleeve is tight and difficult to grasp and slide (improved with suggested silicone spray but still tight); I used paraffin wax on the chrome (male portion) of the joints of one of the poles which helped to deploy on of them. I'm still working to separate a joint on the other pole (with rubber gripper) and will try paraffin on it when the chrome portion is exposed.

Great pole, there should be some overlap between sizes

The poles are great, pretty light, they feel sturdy, the grips are comfortable, and the straps are comfortable. I wish the two sizes overlapped some; I need an S/M pole for my tent, and my hiking length is in the larger pole. I would have gone with the carbon, but they have no adjustment at all. I also appreciate the two different baskets and the rubber tips included with the set of poles.
