Why We Like The Garmin Edge 840 Solar Bike Computer
The Garmin Edge 840 Solar Bike Computer brings all of the features we love about the Edge 840 with the unique addition of solar charging. When charging in direct sunlight, our battery will last up to 60 hours, adding up to 25 minutes per hour while in battery saver mode to allow longer rides. When used with a compatible heart rate monitor or power meter, we are provided with adaptive coaching, personalized workouts, and stamina insights to help us gauge how much is left in our tank. Whether riding on the road, gravel, or deep in the woods on our favorite dirt trail, the integrated multi-band GNSS technology ensures we stay on the path with superior location accuracy.

Here's what customers have to say
The device offers reliable performance, accurate tracking, and a wealth of data, including features like ClimbPro and training recommendations. Users appreciate the combination of touchscreen and button controls. However, some have experienced issues with screen visibility in direct sunlight and occasional syncing and connectivity problems. While the solar charging capability is seen as a useful addition, it does not significantly extend the battery life for all users.

Solar Screen is Darker then Non Solar
Love the unit, big upgrade from my old 830. But the screen is darker than it should be even with adjusting brightness controls.

Good and Bad……
I’m coming from a 830 to the 840 Solar. Good: side buttons as well as touch screen. Bad: Solar ‘area’ around the perimeter of screen is dark and makes the entire screen dark. Not sure if the solar aspect is worth it. Otherwise nice update once i got rid of ClimbPro and other invasive features that distract me from riding my bike.

Works as advertised, however the software can get buggy depending on what version of the firmware you're on.

Great functionality but dim screen
While I love the improved functionality over my Edge 530, the screen is noticeably dimmer and harder to read. So I just returned it and upgraded to the new 850. That screen is fantastic (and a keeper)!

Great Cycling Computer
I love this cycling computer and how you can load routes in to follow. The solar recharging is super helpful as well.

Really appreciate having the touch screen on this model
I've had a 500, 520, 840, and now the 840 solar. Main use right now is adventure riding so I really appreciate having the solar charging. I've found over the years that all the additional functions that have been added are more of a nuisance than anything so I go in and turn off all the notifications about upcoming climbs, Strava segments, fitness metrics, workout load, etc. Some of those were nice when I was heavy into performance on my road bike, using a power meter, etc. Now it's just plain annoying. I just want to be able to look down when I want info and not have to hear constant beeping, dismiss various notifications, be told there's a hill coming up when I can physically see it in front of me. I'm still rating this unit five stars because all that stuff is available if you want it and you can turn it off when you don't. My favorite two things that I really don't want to be without is my Varia radar unit and the integration with Shimano Di2. As I've gotten older, I enjoy just riding at a more relaxed pace. Just built a carbon Salsa Cutthroat with Di2 and I love that you can use the two extra buttons on the hoods to control other functions via the Garmin. I have it set up right now so that the left hood button skips to the next song and the right button is a play/stop button. I throw a bluetooth speaker in my frame bag to enjoy some music while riding. I don't want to be "that guy" on the trail that disturbs the peace with music when other people are around so as soon as I see someone I can just hit the button on the hood and pause my music until I'm out of earshot of the other people. That all works through the Garmin so now I like the way things work together even more.

Garmin Solar Computer
Garmin computer itself is great but I do not care so much for the solar feature of this computer. I don't feel it charges computer fast enough. Other than that the computer works great and user interface is easy to use. Also its very easy to connect other ant+ and bluetooth devices to be able to get all the data you could possibly need from your rides. Just wish the solar charged more while being used.

Faster than my 830
I bought this recently to replace a lost 830. Although it is faster (processing) I don't like it as much. Had a few glitches with it - get prompts that don't allow you to complete what you were doing and at least once, I ended up in a loop that took dozens of tried to get past and shut down the device to start over. I hope I get used to it and come to like it as much as mt 830.
