300 MerinoFine Polar Roll Neck Top delivers heavyweight warmth and ultra-soft next-to-skin comfort

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

"This top is my go-to for the coldest ski days. The fit is sleek, the merino is super soft, and the roll neck offers the perfect coverage when winds pick up—no extra neck gaiter needed."

When deep winter arrives, we reach for the 300 MerinoFine Roll Neck Thermal Top. Designed for frigid alpine missions, this heavyweight base layer wraps us in warmth thanks to its ultrafine 15.5-micron merino wool construction—soft, breathable, and naturally insulating. The roll neck keeps cold air out without the need for a separate gaiter, and thumb loops make layering under gloves a breeze.

With mobility-boosting raglan sleeves and flatlock seams that minimize friction, this top layers comfortably under shells or midlayers. From icy lift rides to snowshoe treks in single digits, the 300 MerinoFine™ keeps us warm, dry, and ready to push deeper into winter.

Roll neck

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This was expensive, but feels so good and warm on. Worth the money, in my opinion

Not what I expected

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I wanted a turtleneck, and I already have several other icebreaker tops, so I gave this a try. I ordered two sizes because it appears very fitted, and I didn't want it too tight. I sent them both back, for a few reasons. First, Icebreaker's quality has changed noticeably and significantly. All my purchases prior to summer 2024 were very high-quality -- smooth, soft merino wool, substantial weight, soft, warm, and tops meant to be a base layer were nice looking enough that I wear them to work under a jacket or sweater. I love everything I purchased before this past year. Sometime around summer 2024, the products changed for the worse. I ordered repeat items, to add to my own collection and as gifts for others. Boy was my timing bad. I gave these as gifts because I had come to trust the quality and consistency of Icebreaker. The new/different versions of my old favorites are now inferior in a few ways: they feel rough, the wool is itchy, the fabric feels thinner, the hemlines are uneven, the stitching on the black and grey tops is now bright orange -- not exactly "nice" looking. Everything I've ordered since the "change" is an inferior version of its old self. Do the prices reflect the drop in quality? No they do not. I am so disappointed to have lost this company as one of my go-to trustworthy reliable sources of high-quality garments. Back to the thermal top which is the subject of this review. It is too tight (and I am very thin), too long in the back, ITCHY, has "icebreaker" embroidered right in the center of the chest, so no way I could have passed it off as a work shirt under a jacket. And the neck, while it looks fine rolled down, I can't imagine ever needing to pull it up over my face. And the asymmetry of the neck is odd...the back is shaped almost like a hood, but does not reach the top of my head so could not possibly be used as a hood. Just weird. Sadly, this top is a no-go for me. And unless they change back to their former higher-quality production, I think the whole company is a no-go for me now.

Third time buying this top

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'm 5'2", 125 pounds and while Small fits me perfectly, I like the Medium more so that I can layer a heat tech underneath and have a bit more movement. I've gotten this top in black and pink, but couldn't get enough so came back for this rust red. The main draw for me is that the built in neck gaiter is incredibly useful as it's one less layer of clothing I have to maneuver my hair around and a great way to protect from sneaky winds. I have a short torso but I like that they extend the bottom of the hem a bit so that you get an extra layer to keep your butt warm out in the snow and the thumb holes get really handy when you're trying to put on gloves/mittens across multiple layers. Have used these tops (and matching bottoms) for snowboarding, snow backpacking, and a winter trip to Iceland and they have performed wonderfully each time.

second one purchased (different colors). versatile use!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought a bright dark pink (past season) and it keeps me warm in cold elements including as a thick baselayer. Love the high neck to cover half my face / nose area. Very comfortable, fitted/ stretchy

Excellent Quality and Comfort

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Beautiful fabric w a mercerized sheen to the surface that looks gorgeous and will not easily pill or shed. Very comfortable. Attractive cut. Super warm, despite being light weight. The turtleneck is not all one length; it is longer in back and thus can be used as an impromptu hood. I am going to buy a 2nd one. I wish it came in more colors.

Warmly and cozy

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am happy that this item is warm and not very scratchy, which is a problem I sometimes have with wool.
