Hightrail Mid Waterproof Wide Hiking Boot blends trail-ready traction with sneaker comfort

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

"I’ve been impressed with how light these feel for such a sturdy boot. The KEEN.DRY membrane has kept my feet dry in muddy spring hikes, and the all-terrain outsole bites into loose rock and roots really well. The wide fit has just enough extra room without feeling sloppy, which is great on long days."

For days when we want a fast-and-light feel without losing stability, we lace up the Hightrail Waterproof Wide Hiking Boot. KEEN built this boot with a breathable KEEN.DRY membrane to keep water out while still letting vapor escape, so our feet stay dry from the inside out. High-rebound cushioning and a foam strobel board underfoot give us that springy, sneaker-like comfort that makes long climbs and descents easier.

Durability is dialed with a leather mud shield, KEEN.PROTECT toe bumper, and environmentally preferred waterproof leather that holds up to rugged terrain. The KEEN.ALL-TERRAIN rubber outsole uses multi-directional lugs to grip in mud, on rock, and across loose dirt, while a PFAS-free DWR keeps water rolling off the uppers. Whether we’re tackling quick after-work hikes or all-day missions into the high country, this boot balances support, waterproofing, and comfort for wide feet that need space to move.

My favorite Keen boot for daily wear.

I had previously reviewed the Targhee III as my favorite Keen boot, and it was until I bought the Hightrail boot at REI. The Keen Hightrail Hiking boot is my new favorite daily Keen boot. I've owned the Targhee, II, III, and IV. For me the Hightrail is the most comfortable and best fitting out of all of them for daily wear. I need a boot that's versatile in the fall, winter, and spring and can go from walking the dogs on concrete sidewalks, to the office, and light to moderate hiking. All in various weather like rain and snow. And the Hightrail is perfect for that. It's very lightweight and incredibly comfortable, almost like a running shoe. Very similar to my Keen Versicore Speed shoes that I wear in the summer. The toebox is slimmer than the Targhee so I had to go with a wide size to get the same roomy toebox. I wanted the Dark Earth/Oak Buff color but the only color available in wide is Brindle/Oak Buff. It's a nice neutral color so I'm happy with it. The traction seems great so far and I can walk the dogs on concrete sidewalks for miles without any foot or shin pain issues like I had with the Targhee's due to their harder outsole. Which is great for hiking and backpacking, but not urban environments. That's where the Hightrail shines. Overall, the Hightrail is a great all-around hiking boot that I wear every day in the fall/winter/spring.

Amazing most comfortable boots

These boots are amazing. I am so impressed with the comfort and durability. I'm a female with 4X-Wide feet and struggle to find shoes of any kind that fit. I purchased these Men’s size 7 wide width hikers for a trip to Iceland. They are so light weight and comfortable. I did not get any blisters or pain from these. Wore them 17 days straight for 10-12 hours per day. Rain, major mud, waterfalls, climbing caves, walking over lava rocks, etc. They flexed with my feet and kept them dry. I walked 3-5 miles per day. I did not submerge in any streams nor hike major mountains just to level set. I never have been more impressed by a boot in my life. (55+) I would highly recommend these. This company is also military and law enforcement friendly. I purchased via id. me and received a discount as well since I'm a US Veteran. Much appreciated.

Thin ball of foot, not wide enough, heel seam rubs

Undecided. . . cuz these have high potential. . . but. . . I wish there was more cushion under the ball if the foot, cuz just walking around the house i can feel too much. . so walking iver stone would be a no-no lol. I did try adding/swapping other insoles, which made them a maybe. . . but when i do that, my heel rises in the shoe, and then theres a horizontal seam on the inside of the back heel that ends up hitting in a horrible spot i can feel thru the sock even. . . ,yikes. And. . . they could bit a bit wider. They were cute and very bendy. So. . . IF Keen could add more cushion sole thickness to the sole overall/ball of foot especially, & make them a smidge wider, & remove the inner heel horizontal heel seam/raise it, THEN they could be amazing. . . :/

Don’t wait….

The shoe is very impressive. Weight, waterproof, and packed full of details. If you wait I’m pretty sure you won’t be able to pick up a pair. This is like wearing a slipper with all the needed whistles and bells for serious trail use. Thanks for making a top quality boot

Seam is already coming apart

My son has had them for less then a month and the seam has already came apart in one place. Comfortable shoes but falling apart which is sad since they were expensive.

Definitely not a tactical boot

Used this at a couple range classes. Run and gun, moving while shooting. Definitely leaves something to be desired in the foot cushion. Also not as wide as I thought they would be. Toes feel cramped but not as much on my Salomon’s.
