Why We Like The Mountain Hardwear Phantom Belay Down Parka

Built for bone-chilling temps, the Mountain Hardwear Phantom Belay Down Parka boats 800-fill power down for an ultra-lofty, ultra-packable jacket for mountaineers, ice climbers, and winter adventures. That responsibly sourced down gives us great warmth for the weight with an insulated draft tube and box wall baffles that eliminate cold spots to maintain our core temperature we're belaying, stopping for a lunch or snack break, or huddling up at camp. The diamond-fused Pertex ripstop shell may be lightweight, but it's also abrasion-resistant and reinforced in high-wear areas that may rub against rocks, packs, and harnesses. When we're not wearing it, the Phantom Belay Parka packs down small when we stuff it into the included stuff sack.

Excellent in All Ways

Just received this 10-16-25. WOW!! Excellent Parka! I live in the coldest city in America, Duluth Minnesota. Can’t wait to use this Parka in sub zero temperatures and high winds. I usually wear size XL but other reviews stated it runs big so I ordered size Large and it’s just right with enough room for extra layers if needed. I’m very impressed with the quality of this Parka. And it looks great. Very practical and functional. Thanks Mountain Hardwear!

Expensive, Full-Featured, Useless

I purchased this jacket as a belay jacket for winter sport climbing. I spend a lot of time in cold, dry conditions climbing, belaying, hanging out. I needed a warm, durable, packable jacket that i could quickly take on and off and throw into my backpack. This jacket seemed to fit the bill, but one of the most crucial features of the jacket began to fail me - the main zipper. The two-way main zipper became very hard to align and zip smoothly. The alignment features between the two halves were not reliable, and it was possible to zip the jacket with unaligned halves - deforming the first few teeth of the zipper. I reached out to MH warranty and they did replace the zipper with the same model as before. Again, the zipper worked for a few days but now has the same issue as the previous zipper. I cannot reliably align the two halves of the zipper. When the two halves are not aligned, it is either not possible to zip the jacket, or the jacket zips but the first few teeth of the zipper deform. The zipper then locks up and requires a lot of force to open. I can sometimes align the zipper halves so that the jacket zips smoothly closed, but this takes minutes of trial-and-error. This is an expensive, full-featured jacket, I don't understand why MH used such a flimsy, unreliable zipper. The attached images are of my Stretch Down hoody that has the exact same issue. Cheap zippers across the line.

Utilitarian Down with a Great Fit

Love the features of this jacket blending down and synthetic. Rugged ripstop material, packs well for the size, and has become my go to mountain parka. 46” chest - XL fits right on the money.

Highly Recommended Parka

The parka is the warmest and most comfortable jacket I have worn. The inner and outer fabric is very flexible and yet should hold up very well. I am kept extremely warm even in below 0 weather. The build quality and design features are top quality. I would purchase again.
