Warm winter boots
When the tread in my LLBean Snow Sneakers was beginning to be too slick, I came to Muck Boots looking for a boot that was warm, waterproof, and had as non-slip a tread as possible without having cleats. I thought that perhaps the "arctic" outfitting with the vibram soles would provide me more years of trekking than I got from the other winter boots I have. I finally have gotten a chance to wear them in cold, slick conditions. I normally wear a 7-W boot, but Muck doesn't seem to make wide-width booths for women, so I decided to order these in 8. Wearing medium wool socks, the width in the toe box is perfect. I put some ortho inserts for the heel and mid foot and while these boots look ginormous (to me) the fit is decent. I am not used to such a flat "drop" - it feels just about level - and it has affected my gait on slushy, snowy city pavement but not to the point of causing pain. This does not feel like a supportive boot, in comparison to my Merrells or Snow Sneakers and I don't know how much of this has to do with how big they are in comparison to my normal size vs how padded they are. They are difficult to lace snugly. They are warm and waterproof and I feel fairly secure in snow, and moderately secure in slush (where the slush packs into the tread and suddenly they feel like smooth leather soles). I walk 2-3 miles every morning with my dog on hilly pavement in Wisconsin and I am reserving these boots for snowy/slushy/wintery pavement. I prefer my other boots for dry pavement due to the feeling of support in the footbed and lower ankle. Would I recommend these particular boots? If you have wide feet and want a supportive "hiking boot" feel, no.
