Ariel 55L Backpack

The all-new Ariel Backpacks boast Osprey's best-fitting systems so anyone can trek technical terrain comfortably, and the Ariel 55 Backpack is perfectly sized for weekenders and overnighters. The back torso adjusts vertically to customize the fit for all sizes, and On-the-Fly shoulder straps and waist belt adjustments can be cinched on the trail. Osprey not only integrated a rain cover, but also treated the main fabric in DWR in case you don't get the cover on in time. A LightWire frame offers surprisingly stiff rigidity for how light the pack weighs, and Airscape mesh provides breathable ventilation on your back.

Excellent backpack

Did my first long distance walk with this bag and super happy with the experience. Very comfortable, easy to use, nifty storage space, durable, high quality

I fell in love with

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I fell in love with this pack instantly! My first trek was pretty comfy considering how much weight I carried. I love how adjustable this pack is and how easy it is to adjust in route. This was especially nice on some variable terrain. I will also add that Osprey was a solid choice for the entire crew!

Perfect for multi day hiking / camping

Just completed 6 days hiking in the tough conditions of South Africa / Lesotho Drakensberg. The various compartments and external loops extra were perfect. I especially liked the way the main compartment opened from both the top and the front - vital when in a tiny tent overnight.

Expensive bag that did not deliver

I tested the bag on a 2 day trip where I covered 28 miles. The weight put in the bag was approximately 12kg. Although some features were on point such as well cushioned shoulder straps and main compartment accessible from the top and front, other design details did not work. Hip belt - I found it difficult to adjust to my body, it was bruising top of my hip bones or when adjusted higher - did not hold the weight of the bag so my shoulders had to. I also found that every time the bag was put on the ground, stuff like sheep wool, dry grass and dirt would stick to the belt stickers, which was difficult to remove. Hip belt pockets - if filled, they got in the way of my arm movement when walking. I had to keep my arms away from my body to avoid hitting the pockets on every step. Adjustable back height - the openings to access the straps required to adjust the back height were way too tight and I struggled to reach in. Side water bottle pockets - I use larger bottles on the long hikes and I was struggling to get the bottle (1L) out through the pocket bottom as designed. I would not feel comfortable taking this bag on the multi day hike again. I contacted Osprey to return the bag but they would not accept it as it was already used.

Sizing needs updating

im not sure who this is designed for. the xs/s fit should be designed for someone failry short and small, however the waist band is absoluty massive. even fully tightened its nowhere near being snug (you would have to overlap the hip padding to get it tight enough!) which is essential for a bag this size as you need to carry the weight on your hips. its a shame you can't find bags that fit smaller women.

10 Years and Still Like New!!

Spent three months backpacking in Europe upon my retirement, at age 65, with this wonderful Osprey backpack! We traveled in all kinds of weather and used all modes of transportation! Also, have been backcountry camping in Canada, California, and Colorado! She still looks new after a busy 10 years on and off the trails! I am currently looking to downsize to a smaller Osprey backpack…walking the Camino in a few months! Only an Osprey works for me!!

Best Investment!!

Bought this pack for a short backpacking trip on the Napali Coast. I have lower back pain so I needed a pack that distributed the weight very well. My pack was about 30-35lbs and I made it the entire trip without any pain or even soreness in my low back. It was quite incredible considering the many elevation changes- I'm definitely impressed. I will say that toward the end on our hike out my shoulders began to cramp up so I had to do some adjusting to the straps but I think it's just I didn't have it set right. I really really love this pack and it's worth the investment!

Pretty Great, some small annoyances

With the pack, I've gone on one small thru hike so far and used it for my conservation corps job last summer. Fits my torso pretty well, and I can cram a lot of stuff in there. I was actually able to fit my iPhone 6s with a case in the hip pocket, which was impressive. My biggest issue is the water bottle pockets on the sides of the pack. When my pack is full, it is so difficult to fit my water bottles back in the pockets because there is not enough elasticity. It is also difficult to reach behind and pull the water bottles out while I'm hiking. As someone who does not like to take their pack off to grab some water, it can be very annoying. On that same note, the zippers are all very strong, and kinda hard to pull one handed, which is good if you are worried about the security of your items. But for me, I like to reach into my brain while hiking to grab whatever I need from there, and can end up taking a little longer to try to open it or close it than I would like to. Overall, it's been a reliable pack, just a few small things to contend with for my hiking style at least.

Didn't get five stars because of color

If you are looking for a true black backpack this is not the bag for you. The picture is deceiving and the description as well.
