Mutant 22 Backpack climbs light and fast with alpine-focused design and refined durability
What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
"I’ve taken the Mutant 22 on everything from fast alpine pushes to local mixed lines, and it’s hands-down one of the best minimalist climbing packs out there. It carries close, keeps gear secure, and sheds snow like a champ. Love that it’s glove-friendly and tough enough for sharp ice tools and rock contact."
When vertical terrain calls, we reach for the Osprey Mutant 22 Backpack—built for fast, focused alpine missions and tested by guides who know the mountains inside and out. This compact pack delivers the essentials in a streamlined package, with the latest iteration bringing lighter, tougher fabrics and refined features that make every move on snow, ice, or rock more efficient.
The alpine-specific design includes glove-friendly buckles, dual ToolLocks for secure ice tool carry, and an internal compression system that secures a rope without bulking out the profile. It’s engineered to carry close to the body for stability on sketchy ridgelines and mixed terrain, while a snowshed backpanel prevents buildup and keeps the pack performing cleanly. Made with bluesign® approved NanoFly® and recycled high-tenacity nylon, the Mutant 22 is proof that lightweight gear can still pack a punch.

I am using my bag
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am using my bag for work and biking to work . My back is happy for me because the support on the bag is great . Wish it had at least one pocket outside .

Overall great climbing bag but critical issues
After doing quite a bit of research I bought this pack. Previously, I used a cold cold world Valdez pack but wanted something a bit smaller for multi pitch climbing. The first thing noticed was that the top/main zipper snags every time one opens or closes it, due to the top being squarish and the zip has to go around a sharp corner. This makes me wonder if zipper will last, when I have the pack full. Speaking of, the amount of volume is just perfect for days's outing - fits a single rack, harness, helmet, water bottle, sandwich... Once climbing, the lack of a top pocket is very evident. One has to open the main zip and then open the internal zip pocket to get something small. For comfort, the straps at the top are quite close and feels tight on the neck.

Great bag but not fully unisex
I needed a mid-size bag for a full day of multi-pitch climbing, crag hopping, and lots of hiking in between. Priorities were lightweight, supportive, wearable while climbing, and water bladder compatibility. This bag fits the bill on all of those and is built to comfortably accommodate a harness while being to easily access gear. Where it missed the mark for me was that it's built for a male body. I tried as many adjustments as much as possible but as a 5'4"" female I couldn't get the right fit. I hope osprey recognizes an untapped market and creates female versions of these technical bags some day, like they do for hiking bags!
