Mutant 52 Backpack powers alpine expeditions with rugged stability and strippable, summit-ready features

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

"When I'm heading into the mountains for multi-day alpine climbs, the Mutant 52 is my pack of choice. It hauls everything I need—ropes, rack, bivy gear—and still carries close and balanced. I especially like the removable lid and helmet carry system when I'm trying to stay light at altitude. It's been a bomber companion through everything from snowy couloirs to exposed alpine ridges."

When the forecast reads “alpine sufferfest,” we load up the Osprey Mutant 52 Backpack and get after it. Designed for high-elevation, multi-day missions and thoroughly tested by guides who live in the vertical world, this large-capacity alpine pack strikes the ideal balance between burly hauling capability and streamlined technical performance.

The pack’s 52-liter design holds ropes, ice tools, protective gear, extra layers, and bivy setups with room to spare. Dual aluminum stays and a snow-shedding backpanel keep the load steady and comfortable, even under pressure. Strippable components—like the lid, hipbelt padding, helmet carry net, and gear straps—help us trim down for summit pushes. Built with recycled, bluesign® approved NanoFly® and robic fabrics and PFAS-free DWR, the Mutant 52 is tough on terrain but light on environmental impact.

Skiing with technical climbing pack

I used it for backcountry skiing the fit and how it proformed when skinning or skiing excellent. Its only top accessible, and a lack of easy acces pocket for avalanche equipment. Note I knew it wasn't a dedicated ski pack wanted something larger then what was available. Was able to comfortably carry and ski with heavier loads. I enjoyed 50 days of skiing something like 35 of them were backcountry here in Alaska. Skiing adventures from Hatcher pass ,with lots of local runs near Anchorage , and some trips to Turnagain pass.
