Why We Like The Osprey Talon Velocity 20L Backpack
The Osprey Talon Velocity 20L Backpack stashes away everything we need for a day spent hustling up switchbacks and pushing toward summits. The 20-liter backpack has a running vest-inspired shoulder harness that keeps the bag close so we can move quickly on the trails, while the AirScape back panel keeps cool, refreshing air moving on hot summer hikes. The cinch-top closure allows us to compress the bag to minimize excess fabric, while side compression straps secure trekking poles, ice axes, or other bulky items. The front stretch pocket can accommodate helmets and jackets, while the quick access shoulder strap pockets keep our phone and snacks a quick reach away.

Fantastic rucksack
Cannot fault this bag. Bought it for speedy summer day ascents in the Pyrenees and more than able to cope with the load. Plus helmet, ice axe and crampons secured quickly using the external attachment loops. The XL size option is perfect fit for me and still plenty squashable for flight carry on. Since then it’s also performing well as a running and cycling commute bag.

Hiked 20 miles over the
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Hiked 20 miles over the weekend. The 20l kept me from over packing. The fit was 10/10, I’m 5’7 and use a sm/m. I wish osprey made more packs with the running vest. Game changer for sure. Would recommend this bag for any day hike.

Flimsy
I actually returned it. Really flimsy - whilst I know it’s aimed for light packing, this is a bit too light.

Just right for a day pack
I needed a smaller pack for day walks and the velocity 20 was just right, I think all packs should have the straps with the webbing to hold your drink bottle and smart phone. So far this pack has been comfortable and practical for the use I intended it for.

Jury is still out honestly.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Jury is still out honestly. This pack is one I'm getting used to. Without having a frame it's been a slight struggle for me. The back (against my back) padding doesn't stay 'flat'. You have to be very particular how you pack the main compartment and how much water you have in the bladder to make the pack conform to your body/back. I have not figured that out yet. If it were just that it would be 2 stars. But the runners harness brings it back up to 4 stars. I really wish the runners harness was on the Talon pro 20lt! That would be the pack I really want/need. (but sadly it's not). I'm going to use it a lot this summer and see if I can figure out the frameless fit better. . . I'll try to update this afterwards.

Extremely comfortable
Very comfortable, good pockets. Slightly weird opening to the main compartment (looks like it could be more rain proof)

This style of pack was
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This style of pack was a first for me, and I wasn't sure if I would like it or not. I used it for the first time last week on a quick 10-miler with 2700' of gain, and LOVED it! The pack design is incredibly versatile and functional, and I got full use of all the pockets and the quick-access pole holder. I didn't use a bladder with it this time, but the chest pockets for 500ml bottles worked great! The pack is incredibly light, might be the most comfortable I've ever worn, and can hold far more than would ever be needed for even an extended day-hike (I had layers with me as I started in early morning cold and ended in full sun). It was easy to fit with the adjustable back, harness and load adjusters. The hipbelt and lumbar panels felt secure and the entire pack distributes loads well. So why 4-stars, here are the issues I found: 1. The reach-in access for the side pockets is a great idea, and bottles were secure, but still came out with relative ease. Putting them back in required a bit of patience (and flexibility). 2. When full, the zipper on the hip pocket can be hard to pull closed. 3. The Airscape back panel is in full contact with your back, and while it breathes well, I was moving fast (the point of this pack) and sweating heavily under it. 4. The DWR finish didn't seem to do its job. I found that sweat soaked into the pack fabric, and while it dried quickly, objects in the hipbelt pockets did get wet (some paper I had in there got ruined). This may not be an issue in dry, desert climates, but is one in more humid climes. I would absolutely recommend a cover for this pack if you have any chance of rain as moisture soaks right through it (so much for the DWR treatment). Otherwise, I would fully recommend this pack. I'm looking forward to using it on ALL of my fast-pack hikes!

Brilliant bag
Used this bag straight after buying for a 35km hike round Brecon and it was fantastic. Really comfortable, didn’t rub anywhere and the storage around the bag works brilliantly and is very well thought out. Type of bag you can tell is designed by people who actually use the products. The bag works really well for fast hiking and running as the adjustable back makes it really versatile.

Perfect Fly Fishing / Trail Running Pack
I regularly pair long distance trail running with fly fishing (a sport I call the "Flyathlon") and I can honestly say that the Talon Velocity 20 is the perfect pack for combining the two sports. The 20+L main compartment is plenty of space to hold a rain jacket, lunch, a water filter, a reel, and an assortment of flies boxes, leaders, and tippet while running. The stretch-mesh front shove-it pocket is the perfect size for a narrow fly fishing net, the two side pockets are ideal to stow and secure both my 6-piece pack rod and my trekking poles, and the diverse front pockets are sized just right to stash and easily access fly boxes and other fishing gear while actively fishing. The external hydration sleeve greatly reduces the time to access and refill my hydration bladder on the go. Finally, even when fully loaded, the running-vest-inspired harness minimizes bouncing and load shifting when trail running. I thought I had found the ideal Flyathlon pack in another brand, but after a friend of mine put me on to the Talon Velocity 20, I have a new favorite!
