Alpine Onset Merino 150 Beanie delivers warmth and breathability in a sleek profile

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

“This is the beanie I stash year-round. It’s warm but never sweaty thanks to the merino blend, and the low-profile fit slides under a ski or bike helmet without bunching. Whether I’m hiking, touring, or just running around town, it’s my go-to.”

We count on the Alpine Onset Merino 150 Beanie from Outdoor Research to keep us warm without overheating, whether we're climbing skin tracks, running trails, or layering up on brisk morning commutes. Its ultralight design and helmet-compatible fit make it the kind of piece we forget we’re even wearing—until we notice how dry and comfortable we’ve stayed.

This beanie pairs the natural thermoregulation of merino wool with synthetic fibers to enhance durability, stretch, and moisture-wicking performance. Its flat-seam construction sits comfortably under a helmet or hood, and the itch-free feel ensures all-day wearability from the first frost to spring’s final chill.

Nice lightweight beanie. I use it when I walk to class in the winters.

Just right

Yes, thin, very. Perfect weight for temperatures to above freezing and great for anytime you’re active in the cold. I wear 7 3/8 size and the L/XL fits just right. My only complaint, when I ask for one for Xmas, nobody gets it for me as they’re all sold out. Great cap.

Great High Output Activity “Beanie”

I bought this for something to have under my snowboard helmet on warm days when I remove the ear warmers. Because the liner comes out too I need something between or else it’s just Velcro directly on my hair. This beanie is perfect for wicking sweat and the medium is a great size for me, just barely covers my entire ears, exactly what I wanted. I’d imagine it will pill and wear down from the Velcro eventually, but this beanie suits my needs perfectly. I think some reviews don’t understand the use of this type of hat, but I don’t think Outdoor Research calling it a beanie helps, usually people think warm when hearing beanie.

Don’t waste your time or money go to alternatives

First off these beanies fit goofy way big second off returns are ridiculously long, blue collar guy here always looking for warm high quality material one this beanie is as thin as can be, maybe be able to use it during a colder than usual fall day. Second mailed my return back it takes them 10 days to even get you a return back in the mail and then you have to wait for their shipping that takes two weeks. I run a business this company is unsat, plenty of better alternatives out there, don’t waste your time because they don’t care enough about your business.

Beanie for the Win

Not much to say - it's a good Beanie! Well fitting, maintains its stretch after washing and wearing. Good under a cycling helmet on colder days.

Thin enough to see through

I got this as a gift for a friend for Christmas, who had requested a very warm winter hat. The red color is really nice and I'm glad it's merino, but it is shockingly thin and in no way would work as a winter hat in Michigan. Maybe you could use it as a liner for another hat, although that seems needlessly complicated. I cannot get over the claims that it will work in single digit temperatures - I assure you as someone who regularly buys merino socks and backpacking underlayers, that's not true. It's way too thin, especially if there is any kind of breeze. Holding the material up, it's easily see through. Again, the burgundy color is nice, and if you want a stylish hat for the mildest temperatures, this might be for you, but I cannot give this to my friend. I'll be looking for an actually warm hat, instead.

Perfect for so many things

Perfect for high-performance activities. I love this for running and temperatures below 40°. The Marino will is excellent for not trapping sweat. Sometimes I will double it up if it’s very cold and they still stay breathable. This is also great for casual wear because it fits nicely in a pocket. Unlike a bulky thick hat. And it’s also great for wearing under a helmet such as a ski helmet. Love the Alpine onset Marino beanie!

thinner then pantyhose

Very thin. Doesn’t even cover my ears. For the price, very disappointed.
