Lightweight protection and breathable comfort with the Astroman Air Sun Hoodie

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

"This is my favorite layer for sunny alpine climbs and desert missions. It’s super light, breathes better than anything else I own, and gives just enough coverage without making me overheat. The hood fits great under a helmet too."

Built for full days in the sun and fast-moving alpine objectives, the Outdoor Research Astroman Air Sun Hoodie delivers breathable comfort, lightweight mobility, and essential sun protection. Designed with input from professional climbers, it’s made for routes, trails, and scrambles where weight and freedom of movement matter.

The stretch-woven fabric enhances airflow and offers UPF 30 protection to shield against intense exposure. A helmet-compatible hood adds streamlined coverage, and the quick-drying materials keep us comfortable when we’re pushing hard. Whether we're linking ridges or chasing afternoon summits, the Astroman Air keeps the focus on the adventure, not the gear.

Great hoody with minor qualms

I’ve put this thing through the wringer. Recently, i I wore this hoody everyday for 15 days, half of which was spent paddling in Quetico Provincial park and the other half hiking in Olympic national park. It performed gallantly in both settings. Ultimately the shirt met its end after being eaten and regurgitated by a deer in the Olympics, bummed I have to shell out for another now. Qualm 1: kind of a spendy shirt (though worth it in my book). OR is often tough to size for me, I went with a medium on this one, which after breaking it in was the right call. Their Mediums tend to be too tight in the shoulders but just right everywhere else for my 6’2” 195 frame. Regardless, the shirt is awesome, breathes well, resists the stink of repetitive daily use, and has a super functional chest pocket and a deep hood. The ability to unzip the 1/4 zip chest is really great too. My only frustration was occasionally the size of the hood. It’s honestly a big enough hood to get around a climbing helmet, I’m sure by design, but that size hood doesn’t like to stay on a normal head or hat in windy conditions. The addition of a minimalistic draw cord to cinch it down a bit would be nice.

Second one I've purchased. Extremely lightweight, comfortable, and packable. Great over a shirt or on it's own.

Great fit

Great shirt for running. Sizing guide is accurate. Waistband on the shirt is not flexible so size up if you want a looser fit.

excellent fit, great in the sun, fabric abrasion

I love using this hoodie - had it on for sailing a lot of last summer. fit and cut are fantastic - as a thin lightweight garment it draped really well for 5'10" 220lbs. I've gotten leaner at 200lbs now and still looks like it fits really well. BEWARE the surface is extremely sensitive to abrasion - does not play well with backpacks. took it for a run today and the velcro on my hat kept clinging to it too.

Nice pullover. Blocks out sun and lightweight. Nice for cooler weather. Hot weather makes it a little sweaty. Great to protect skin from sun.

My 3rd one.

I live in this thing all summer. On the boat, on the beach, biking the Andes Mountain. I also got it treated for mosquito protection. It's my favorite piece of clothing.

Worth every penny

Absolutely love this shirt. It’s made of magic. Awesome for summer around water. Dries very quickly. Can wear swimming instead of sunblock. Keeps the sun off you and keeps you cool as it breathes well. Also keeps you warm as the sun goes down. I have a bunch of these. I wear them all the time! Great for most outdoor activities.

Great lightweight layering piece of kit.

Tried and true gear. Do not wear it as the outer layer if carrying a heavy backpack; put a lightweight vest over it to receive the strap rubbing.

I use the hoody during my runs and really enjoy the breathability, light weight, and zip pocket for gels/phone. I also really like how the hood fits over my hat and sits comfortably as I'm running. I can see myself using it more during summer hikes/runs.
