Why We Like The Carbide Jacket

Versatile, low bulk, and stylish to boot, the Outdoor Research Carbide Jacket gives us burly protection against the elements through long days exploring the resort. The 3-layer Pertex Shield construction, along with fully sealed seams, offers waterproof, breathable performance in some of winter's worst storms, while the zippered underarm vents help us dump excess heat quickly after hiking for your turns. The wire-brimmed Halo Hood provides reliable visibility when the snow is coming down sideways, and a powder skirt keeps snow from sneaking in when we take a tumble.

Here's what customers have to say

This versatile jacket performs well in various weather conditions, providing good protection against wind, rain, and snow. Customers praise its waterproof, windproof, and breathable properties, as well as its effective insulation. The jacket features useful elements like a powder skirt, pit zips, and ample pockets. While the fit is generally good, some users found the main zipper difficult to operate, especially when wearing gloves. Overall, this appears to be a high-quality shell that keeps users warm and dry during outdoor activities.

A little long, but otherwise great.

Very nice jacket. I have the matching bibs from last season and while the fabric feels very thin, I know it to be very durable. The fit is a little too long, but that probably works for taller folks.

Versatile shell layer

This jacket is my go to for staying dry all year round. I've used this jacket, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, doing trail work, and walking day to day. It is my favorite piece of gear I own and its served me well.

Hands down best shell jacket!

Recently purchased the Carbide, so happy I did, can't say enough good about it. Was out in 0C(-6C windchill w/ 60KM winds) with snow, just wore a tshirt and the Tokeland fleece jacket under and was perfectly comfortable 👌 This jacket blocks ALL wind and is so breathable that there was no condensation whatsoever. The stretch/mobility is fantastic and is super quiet, can't tell you have it on. Probably sounds like a paid advert but this is coming from one happy OR customer, you won't be disappointed.

Tears Easily

Good product, keeps the wind from ripping through you. However the material is not durable at all. It tears very easily when skiing through glades and it catches a twig.

I appreciated the color and fit however there are no wrist gaiters nor lining backing the pit vents. The jacket came zipped up but it was misaligned and very hard to unzip. Once the pit vents are opened, they are very tricky to close. And the stuff wire that holds up the chin guard was very uncomfortable. No matter what I did, the jacket tickled/rubbed my chin. Not well designed. I'll stick with my previous brand.

Exceptional Ski Jacket When Layered with Base Layers

This jacket fit perfectly and offered a lightweight and durable jacket for my Colorado ski trip. It is thin and worked best when paired with level 1 and level 2 base layers for warmth. The only time I got “cold” was when I was sitting on the ski lift headed up to the peaks of Breckenridge and Keystone when the wind was brutal… not sure if any other jacket would have stopped the cold from getting through. For reference, I am 5’9’’ and 200 pounds with broad shoulders, and the large fit me perfectly. The temps in Colorado during my time there was single digits to mid 20s (Fahrenheit). This jacket works best paired with strong thermal under-layers, but is an exceptional lightweight ski jacket.

Perfect do it all Shell

I was concerned about the thickness of the material when I first got it. it seemed thin and could possibly tear, but I have put this shell to the test on long tours scraping trees and brush and it hasn't shown any wear. My only complaint is that I wish the powder belt sinched a hair tighter.
