Waterproof performance and packable protection in the Foray 3L Jacket
What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
"This is my go-to shell for wet-weather hikes and summer thunderstorms. The full-length side zips are a lifesaver for venting heat, and the fit is versatile enough for layering without feeling bulky."
The Outdoor Research Foray 3L Jacket is built for serious weather protection without weighing us down. Its AscentShell Dry 3-layer membrane teams up with a Nikwax DWR finish to keep heavy rain and wind at bay while maintaining breathability when we’re moving hard. On steep climbs, the TorsoFlo side zips open from hem to bicep to release heat or even convert into poncho mode to shield our pack. Whether we’re heading into alpine storms or packing light for variable conditions, the Foray provides dependable waterproofing, adaptable ventilation, and a clean fit that works from trail to town.

Here's what customers have to say
The jacket is described as highly effective at waterproofing and breathability, with durable, high-quality construction and a flexible fit suitable for layering. Key strengths include excellent weather protection, ventilation features, and practical design. However, some users noted the jacket wetted out quickly in heavy rain and had a snug fit, especially for layering. Overall, the jacket seems to be a versatile and well-regarded rain shell for outdoor activities.

keeping me dry!
already put this puppy to the test bike commuting in the pnw. biggest concern buying this online was if the hood would fit over my helmet and if the sizing would allow baselayer or be too tight. hood def fits and a medium is slightly baggier than other mediums but i can fit baselayers and a micropuff under if it's super cold.

Great breathable rain jacket
This is a great coat with enough waterproofness to hike in a downpour, but it still breathes well. The pit zips are huge. Overall quality is very good. Could see using this for hiking, biking, and even spring ski days or touring.

Not Waterproof - 2 Jackets Both Failed
SO FRUSTRATED with this product!! I have now owned 2 of these jackets, the first I had warrantied and replaced because it was no longer keeping me dry, despite multiple treatments with Nikwax. The 2nd I have had for just over a year now, and I am getting completely soaked once again within 30 minutes of being outside in the rain. I have treated the coat with Nikwax and have followed the instructions meticulously, and yet the coat does not perform whatsoever... Do not spend your money on this coat. Go with a different brand, as this sells for far too much considering how weak the performance is.

Solid rain jacket for general use. Used it as an outer layer while leading a rafting trip (pre dry top folks). Dry. Also solid wind breaker. I will see how it works as a skiing shell combined a fleece. I think this is a solid intermediate rain jacket. Hopefully I will be able to use it as my main jacket for a bit. Oh and the pit zips!!!!! THE PIT ZIPS!!!

Not waterproof for more than 30 minutes
This jacket may have a great design and vent well, but it just is not waterproof. After less than 30 minutes rain, I get wet at the neck and the shoulders. If you intend to use it as a rain jacket, look elsewhere.

Awesome
This jacket arrived the day before the first storm of the season. Handled it like a champ, and has been through several more storms without any issues. I took it off after a storm, threw it on my truck seat and grabbed it two days later and a lot of water flew off it when I grabbed it again. This jacket doesn't absorb anything. I'm a big guy - 5'11" & 240 lbs. Ordered an XL, sleeves were long enough which is an issue I run into a lot with my ape arms. A little tight in the gut area, but that's because I'm fat. Must buy.

Used it in our first rain of the year while riding the bike and it worked great. Like the side zippers for ventilation.

Great jacket for a 3-1
It doesn’t have the nice zipper in the front. at least it’s not visible. but it’s a great jacket anyways

Less “Ultralight”, Better “All-Around”
I have extensively used the Gen 2 version of the Foray made with Goretex Paclite. It is thinner and lighter, but it is also less roomy which impacts ability to layer. It is also more plasticky to the touch. This Gen 3 is slightly roomier in the torso and much roomier in the sleeves, and while that may make it a little less fashionable when worn over a tee, it makes it very comfortable to layer with. The textile is also more pleasant to the touch. To me, the Gen 3 feels like a transition from more of a niche slim ultralight shell to a versatile all-around shell, and I think that’s a good thing for most users. Otherwise the feature set remains the same, including the awesome poncho feature. I cannot speak to durability yet, nor breathability in extreme circumstances - but so far I have no reason to believe it will fall short in those regards.

No longer 3L Gore-Tex
I've had several 3L Foray Rain Jackets, and they've all performed perfectly. Always true to size, with a stretchy athletic fit. I was bit bummed to learn that the Foray is being longer constructed with Gore-Tex waterproofing. Still, a solid jacket made by a fantastic manufacturer with an unbeatable "infinite" guarantee.
