Why We Like The Outdoor Research Helium Bivy

The Outdoor Research Helium Bivy is ideal for moving fast through alpine terrain and wilderness expanses without excess weight slowing us down. Don't let its minimalist design fool you into thinking it's lacking weatherproof performance or functional features. The Helium Bivy offers total waterproofing and maximum breathability with its Pertex Shield Diamond Fuse 2.5-layer membrane, TPU floor lamination, and fully taped construction. We stay pleasantly dry when we're camping out in widely variable conditions, all without soaking in a steam room of built-up perspiration during humid summer months.

The Helium features a clamshell design that promotes a restful night's sleep with a Delrin Single-Pole system acting as a stabilizing structure for the bivy itself. The hood unzips during pleasant weather for extra ventilation and impressive stargazing potential. No-See-Um mesh lining keeps biting insects from eating you alive when you're sleeping with the hood unzipped. Other key features include dedicated straps for attaching your sleeping pad, an internal mesh pocket, and stake-down points for securing this bivy in nasty weather.

Here's what customers have to say

The product has a mixed reception. Many users praise its lightweight, compact design and versatility for backcountry use, highlighting its quick setup, good ventilation, and ability to access the night sky. However, several report significant issues with water resistance and condensation, even in moderate weather, leading to a soaked sleeping bag and miserable experience. Some also complain about the tight fit and difficulty getting in and out. Overall, the product seems suitable as a lightweight, minimalist option for short trips or as a backup shelter, but may not provide reliable weather protection for extended use or harsh conditions.

Light weight Bivy

Light weight easy to find color, enjoying my Bivy. The material is light weight so depending on what you are looking for, some might think this is a little ‘wimpy’ but it is fine for my needs. It will have slight condensation inside, I have tried a variety of bivies and cannot find a way to avoid this. At least everything about this Bivy dries out fast!

OR - Helium Bivy

I used this in the Adirondack High Peaks Wilderness in below-freezing weather with about 30mph winds. It did a great job blocking the wind and keeping out a lot of the chill. As long as you have the correct sleeping bag inside, this bivy will do the job. It's durable and spacious. It fit me no problem and I'm 5'9 ~270lbs. I still had room inside as well. It's also very lightweight and compact. My only complaint is that it doesn't open from the side, so I had to shimmy in and out through the top in freezing weather. This isn't fun as a bigger guy. If you're NOT overweight like me, this shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Backcountry cant follow through on order

Order never arrived, no communication from Backcountry. Waited a long time, checked often, no updates. Contacted Backcountry turns out the order was cancelled but nobody contacted me. Backcountry seems to hate paying humans to work, everything is so automated nobody knows whats going on. I finally was able to reach someone in the company and was told me order was cancelled. Then the robots asked me to write this review, which is interesting since you cancelled my order, didnt tell me and now expect me to write a review? I will make an effort to avoid Backcountry in the future and support companies who support people more than soulless robots.

Great for a backup

This thing saved me when I thought I’d be sleeping in a Hammock but a cold front came through. Only issue I had was condensation build up. I wouldn’t use it as a primary but it was a handy backup.

Cozy

I used this on a 268 mile 4 night bike packing trip through the Los Padres National Forest. It packs small and is light. It’s easy to set up and tear down making it great for a beginner or expert hiker or bike packer. The zipper is a little funky to use from the inside, especially if you only want the mesh closed. The foot area is a little narrow so stay away from wide sleeping pads. I’m 6’0” 190 lbs and fit with some room to spare but not much. If I used a foam pad that would give me more room than my current 3” air pad.

Great lightweight bivy!

I use this for backcountry hunts. I appreciate that it is lightweight and compact. I also like that there is a tie up point that can be used if you wan to cut even more weight by leavi g the pole at home. Steakout points are also great especially when sleeping on uneven or sloped grassy ground as it keeps the bivy in place and helps keep the material out of your face while sleeping. The only real downside as is true with all bivies is the condensation which can be managed somewhat by sleeping head out or with just the bug net up.
