Breathable and technical, the R1 Air Crew Top regulates heat on high-output missions

What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:

"This is my go-to fleece for ski touring and cold-weather runs. The R1 Air Crew manages heat so well—it dumps excess warmth fast but still keeps me insulated when I pause. The jacquard fleece feels soft on the skin and doesn’t bunch under a shell. I love the chest pocket for stashing a gel or chapstick on the move."

We turn to the R1 Air Crew Top when the objective demands movement and precision in frigid conditions. Designed by Patagonia with alpine efficiency in mind, this technical fleece uses a unique zigzag jacquard knit that breathes easily while retaining the warmth we need to keep pushing uphill. Whether we’re skinning toward a summit or hustling through frosty trail runs, this crew top keeps us warm, dry, and moving freely.

Built with 100% recycled polyester and hollow-core fibers, the R1 Air prioritizes sustainability while offering advanced moisture management. Offset shoulder seams enhance comfort under heavy packs, and the zippered chest pocket keeps essentials close at hand without adding bulk. It’s the perfect midlayer for high-output missions in variable mountain conditions.

I have 3 other R1 Air pieces, the Full Zip Hoody and 2 Half Zip Pullovers; and wanted at least one of these for the cusp between indoors & outdoors. Last year, a 3rd party review said R1 Air offered the best thermoregulation of any fleece on the market, and I would not quibble with that assessment. You will feel comfortable indoors if it's a little chilly and yet - magically - nice and warm down into the 30s outdoors. I guess people use these R1 Air garments for exercise, since they are SO breathable; I live in Northern Florida so I do not have such a situation, so I can't comment. All I can say is: I have R1, R1 Techface and R1 Air in my closet, and this is the BEST iteration of R1 in Patagonia's lineup - full stop. Be forewarned: if you get one R1 Air, it won't be your last!
