What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
"This is my go-to shoe for unpredictable conditions where I need protection, grip, and all-day comfort. The integrated gaiter keeps the junk out, and the midsole rides smooth no matter how sketchy the terrain gets."
For long adventures where the trail is more of a suggestion than a path, we lace into the Salomon S/LAB Genesis Spine Trail Running Shoes. These trail dominators are crafted for pushing deep into backcountry terrain, offering reliable traction, secure fit, and high-mileage comfort in one purpose-built package.
Designed with rugged mixed terrain in mind, the Genesis Spine features All Terrain Contagrip® for confident footing across loose rock, mud, and slick slabs. The zip gaiter wraps the ankle for extra protection from debris, while the Profeel Film and SalomonFOAM midsole keep us feeling smooth and responsive through extended outings. Great shoe let down by the upper
Comfortable, fast feeling shoes with a very similar fit to the regular (no gaiter) version. Would be great to see a proper waterproof upper as this one hardly keeps slush at bay. I don’t think this would compromise the breathability, because they are already pretty sweaty as is.

Excellent winter running shoe for Rocky Mountains.
Despite what other reviews say I can report that yes they are absolutely water resistant. I have slogged through slush, puddles and plowed through knee deep snow with my spines and have picked up no more moisture than sweat. For me, they are superior to any other winter system I have used. I used speedgoat gtx with a gator for years. Maybe they were more water resistant? They were definitely way more sweaty than the spines so my feet were often wet. Shoes are such a personal choice with many factors going into what is ideal for an individual. For me, the spines are nearly perfect. They handle the terrain and winter conditions where I live. I also run with the standard genesis in dry and warm conditions. Genesis have been excellent for me at any distance. Makes a lot of sense that overall the spine is performing well for me. I am 5’10” weigh 185 (plow horse not a gazelle), run 20-50 miles a week, live in Utah, run mostly in the mountains and the desert. I typically get about 350 miles out of my Salomon shoes. Hope this helps.

Not even waterproof
Such a weird decision to not use goretex for this kind of design. A totally wasted opportunity which would otherwise been a great shoe for muddy wet conditions.

Agree with others - great idea poor execution
Salomon hasn't really released an integrated mid gaiter like this since the XA Alpine 2, and I agree with other reviewers, this misses the mark. The lace system doesn't stow well--where is the gaiter garage like most other speedlace shoes? And the gaiter itself is too stiff on the back, causing rubbing/chafing. The S/LAB Genesis is a great shoe but it needed to be carefully constructed for this mid version, and I don't think enough thought was put into it. It's also confusing why it's called the "Spine" edition--is this for the Spine race in the UK? Then why isn't the upper waterproof? And if it's supposed to be breathable...this shoe won't do that because of the construction. So again, confusing, but a cool idea.

S/LAB XA ALPINE 2 was better
I compare this shoe to the excellent S/Lab XA Alpine 2, size USA Men 11, which was discontinued. The new S/Lab Genesis Spine, size USA Men 11, is narrower at the ball of the foot and forward. There is no pouch for storage of the interior lace adjuster. For the same price, I liked the fit and construction of the discontinued shoe better than the new one.

Great concept, average execution
So great in so many ways but the shoe is just too narrow, even after sizing up. The shoe doesn't offer a 2E/Wide version & is seemingly unavailable in a Size 13 so it's not going to be possible for me to keep them.
