Here's what customers have to say

The reviews on these hiking boots are mixed. Many customers praise the comfort, support, and durability, finding the boots lightweight, flexible, and providing good traction. However, some experienced issues with the fit, including hot spots and an uncomfortable, snug feel. There were also complaints about the boots making strange noises and falling apart quickly. Overall, the feedback suggests these boots are a hit-or-miss product, with enough negative experiences to raise concerns about consistency and durability. Customers should carefully consider the fit and be prepared to potentially need to replace the insoles or return the boots if they don't work well.

Quality rumors were true, Salomon is lost

I had discounted the reviews that said Salomon quality has declined. I chose to ignore them, and was let down when the right boot upper inside lace eyelet hook broke after 9 miles of light trail use. I had to improvise tying the lace around my ankle to keep them on while I hiked out. I've read other reviews now where others have had the same broken eyelet. I was willing to ignore the weird clopping noise that others have experienced. It's fairly loud when the toebox releases after a step. I can't figure out how they're making a clopping noise with every step, but they do. And for those with narrow feet the lace area near the toe pops up quite far and will catch debris. Might be a future failure point, but mine didn't last long enough to evaluate that issue. Very disappointed. Best to avoid the X ULTRA 5 (and maybe Salomon as a whole) till they work the kinks out.

Painful on the Uphills

I like to hike trails with a lot of vertical gain and these shoes have been the worst footwear I've worn in years. On the ascents, both heels rub very uncomfortably with the back of the boots and painful blisters have been created on multiple hikes with different pairs of wool hiking socks. Its not a sizing issue, its a product issue on where the cushion around the heel on the inside of the boots stops and meets a harder, non-cushioned inside region (this is where hot spots on both heels form). Other aspects of the shoe are fine like the good sole grip and comfortable toe box, but while going uphill all you can feel is hot, painful friction in the heels. I'm writing this so that hopefully you can avoid the pain which I experienced while hiking.

X Ultra 5 are the new X Ultra 4

Excited for my fresh pair of X Ultra 5 mids. Solomon shoes always perform beyond expectation. I've been wearing Solomon hiking shoes since the early 1990's.

Nice boot but, newer is not always better

Prior to these, I’d owned the X Ultra 4 mid and they were actually the best boots I’d ever owned, I’d have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone. They were light, incredibly comfortable out of the box, offered just enough support and gripped to anything. The only negative was that, eventually they began to split where the fabric creases as your toes flex. I’d read that one of the key improvements with the 5 was that they’d strengthened this area so, to me it was a no-brainer, if I went for the 5 I’d effectively be purchasing an reinforced version of the 4. The first thing I noticed was the fit. In a normal shoe, I’m about a 10.5 (UK) and wear an 11 in Salomon boots, always have. The 4 fit perfectly in this size, allowing for thick socks and with just enough wiggle room for a bit of foot swelling on long treks. The 5 were noticeably tighter, which was odd considering they’re from the same manufacturer in the same range. Given this, I hoped that they would loosen a little as I broke them in but, unfortunately, now I’m surely past a point where I could reasonably return them for another size, they’re still too snug for me to consider a thick walking sock. The next point is that they make a ridiculous noise as I walk, almost like I’m wearing flip-flops. I can’t quite work out how or why they make the sound but it’s noticeable even on firm turf and quite embarrassing on pavement. This might seem an odd complaint but it’s such an off-putting thing if you’re trying to get away from the world and find some peace and quiet. Finally, not so much a complaint as an observation, again compared to the 4, they’re noticeably warmer. This may be due to then reinforcements that have been added. I’m sure some will like this boot, especially if it’s their first expose to Saloman but, having owned the 4s previously, I’ve been spoilt and now wish I’d just gone back for another pair, rather than being tempted by the shiny new thing.

Disappointed

I agree with this previous review “ The shoes make a noise like flip-flops. Additionally, the areas between the lace holes stick out, which is unacceptable for a shoe in this price range.” Also I find the laces continually come undone.

So good.

This is my first pair of salomon shoes, and I love them. Not only do they look great, they're incredibly comfortable and I took them right out of the box on one of my favorite hiking trails. 👍

Comfortable Right out of the Box

I took these on a 15-mile hike right out of the box, and they were comfortable, supportive, and had just enough cushioning. They are lightweight hiking boots, but protect your feet from sharp rocks and the grip on dry and muddy trails is great. They are a little slippery on stream crossings, but the gore tex keeps your feet dry. I felt they breathed well for a waterproof boot, but don't expect miracles as your feet will still get toasty on long hikes. I did go a half size larger than usual and happy I did to make sure I had enough room in the toes and to wear proper hiking socks.

Redesigned.

Should’ve left well enough alone. Still, Salomon is my go to for duty, tactical, recreation and lifestyle. I’ve honestly haven’t had a hiking boots more comfortable. Prices are fair. Quality is excellent.

OK, I'm Impressed!

This is my first pair of Solomon hiking boots and I'm very pleased. These are lighter than the Moabs I've been wearing and are so much more comfortable on my foot. They are not as bulky feeling. I've had these out on hikes in some very tough terrains with my dog. We hunt and go exploring in the pocono mountains. Our hikes are no less than an hour and are usually at least 2 hours. I've been in swampy areas, muddy areas, and very rocky terrain that will twist and bend the soles of shoes every which-way. I've been out three times with these boots and they are now my go-to boots when we (my dog and I) go out on a run. The water proofing has been perfect. It's very wet where we live in the mountains. I'm thinking of buying the X Utra 5 in the low cut as an everyday shoe.I've only been out in these a few times but I'm sold. I hope they last as good as they look and have performed. Time will tell.
