Why We Like The Speedplay Zero Pedals

We’re excited that Wahoo is bringing back the Speedplay Pedals, and at the top of our list is the new edition of the Speedplay Zero. They're are already known as one of the winningest pedals on the planet, and with the new updates, we reckon they’ll be one of the longest-lasting too. We’ll throw the new Zero on our race bikes, hoping to channel a bit of that Alp de’ Huez power on the next gradient uptick.

Here's what customers have to say

The Wahoo Speedplay pedals have received mixed reviews. Some users praise the improvements, such as the sealed bearings and adjustable float, while finding the new design just as good as previous models. However, other users have reported issues with clipping in and out, lateral play, and quality control problems. There have also been complaints about the availability and compatibility of replacement cleats. Potential buyers should carefully consider the reviews and weigh the pros and cons before making a purchase decision.

Wahoo makes great improvements

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I have been a SpeedPlay user for years. With Wahoo’s purchase of SpeedPlay, a great pedal/cleat system has gotten even better. The first thing I noticed with my new redesigned pedals was the lack of a port to routinely grease the pedals. With previous versions, I needed to use a SpeedPlay grease gun to keep the pedals lubricated, especially after wet rides. My new Wahoo pedals are designed with sealed bearings, in theory eliminating the need to constantly keep them lined. We will see over time how this new design holds up to wear and tear.

I've put it through the wringer

Have been riding Speedplay pedals for 38 years. Tried Shimano and Look and still ride Speedplay.

Great Pedals!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I’ve been riding Speedplay Zero’s and their predecessors for about 25 years and I’m completely sold on them. I bought this last pair about two months ago for my 30 year old son who’s 6’-5” and 235 lbs. and strong as an ox. They work great and he’s very happy with their performance(he had the pre-Zero pedals also). These are tough, light, easy in and out, and adjustable degree of float. Absolutely no complaints about them. I change out the cleats roughly every other year and I ride about 6,000 a year but did 7,500 last year. Allez!

Same Great Speedplay Pedal, No Grease

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I've been on Speedplay's for 20+ years and they have been virtually bulletproof ... if you keep them greased. Yeah, the cleats are good for maybe 5,000 miles, if you keep them clean and dry lubed but for me this pedal design is the best. No compatibility issues with legacy Speedily pedals and the new Wahoo cleats and vice versa. The Wahoo cleats and pedals work the same as legacy speedplay, which means brilliant. I like that I don't have to grease them IF the service life is comparable, time will tell on that.

Long-term Speedplay user

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I have used Speedplay pedals for over twenty years. I like the ability to engage the pedal with my foot being flat and having a slight amount of play in the pedals. The cleat on these pedals is way too complicated. When I could engage the pedal, it was difficult to disengage. You need confidence in your pedals and these are crap. If you are a long-term Speedplay user, reconsider before buying these.

Speedplay Zero pedals

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I’ve had speedplay pedals for years, but never zero pedals. I love them, you don’t have to dial them in to a specific setting (which is how I always thought they worked). I bought them primarily because the of stainless steel base, I had an earlier pair of chromoly pedals get some rust on them after a few years. One bonus is that the ultra light cleats I was already using work great with these pedals, so now I have a backup pair of cleats!

Favorite Pedals

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Been riding Speedplays for over 20yrs with no complaints. Light, low profile, nice float, and no ground strikes when cornering hard when I was still racing. Still using a set from 20yrs ago on my Zwift rig, and have 4 pairs in total across 4 road bikes. Simple, durable, and easy to maintain ... haven't even had to replace any bearings on the oldest ones. Been out of the loop for a while and had no idea they got acquired by Wahoo, but I don't notice any difference in quality. Love these pedals.

Great Pedals, still has minor issue.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

This is my second pair of Speedplay Zero pedals. After a short amount of time riding they develop some lateral play in the spindle. Just enough to feel a minor clicking feeling in the pedals. I've had one pair replaced, and it happened again. This brand new pair ... 2 years later... is doing the same thing.

Stubborn cleats

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I find the standard Wahoo Speedplay cleats really stubborn. They are very difficult to clip in and very difficult to clip out. I would say they are dangerously stubborn when clipping out in an emergency. I’ve used Speedplay clips for 21 years. The Wahoo takeover has hurt quality!
