Recon Stretch Shell with waterproof stretch and versatile coverage for winter mountain missions
What Our Gearhead® Experts Are Saying:
"This is my daily driver shell all winter long. The stretch fabric moves naturally whether I’m skiing hard at the resort or touring in the backcountry, and the ventilation zips are key for dumping heat on climbs. The pocket layout is perfect for keeping gear organized and accessible."
From storm days at the resort to multi-hour skintracks, the Recon Stretch Shell is built for skiers who demand all-day comfort and protection. Its BD.dry 3L waterproof stretch fabric blocks wind and moisture while letting us move freely through technical terrain. The removable powder skirt and helmet-compatible hood seal out blowing snow, keeping us focused on the line ahead.
Pit zips regulate body temperature during ascents, while multiple pockets—hand, chest, lift pass, and internal drop—keep everything from gloves to skins secure and within reach. Reinforced with a PU-coated front zipper and DWR finish, this shell is tough enough for seasons of use. With a RECCO reflector for added safety and a relaxed fit for layering, it’s ready for every mission from first chair to last lap.

Thoughtful design with poor workmanship
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was a bit apprehensive about trying this jacket as my experience with Black Diamond apparel has been a mixed bag compared to their exceptional hardware, and I was correct with some of my fears with this item. The color is a slightly dusty blue with a hint of purple which was surprisingly versatile and pretty while still being understated. It all seems to be a color that would complement a variety of other colors, which can’t always be said for women’s outdoor apparel. The material on first impression is an excellent blend of stretchy and comfortable while still being durable and robust. Now for the bad. The zipper is of such poor quality that I would not bother wearing this outside. I had to wrestle with the zipper to open the jacket fully, and once it put it back on and zipped it up I couldn’t unzip it again. I gave up and pulled it over my head to take if off and to put it back on over a puffy layer. When testing the helmet hood cinch, one of the ties came loose and popped out of the hood completely . It was clear that there were only a couple stitches holding the tie in the hood, not durable enough for outdoor use with it breaking on first use. The fit is interesting, it’s always very telling with outdoor gear what the fit model’s build was when designing a piece. The silhouette of this jacket was a welcome surprise, maintaining a roominess and comfort for layers while retaining its shape and curves without being boxy. That said the sleeves went all the way past my fingers of my short arms, and the bottom hem hit right above my hips with my long torso, not ideal for skiing. The pockets are numerous without being overwhelming: the chest pocket would easily fit a beacon, the forearm pocket is probably the roomiest I’ve come across though I have doubts about the diagonal zipper. The pit zips are one way, which is not my personal preference though it does eliminate ambiguity over which zipper you’re pulling. All of the pockets assume right handed operation, so if you’re a lefty you light want to find a more symmetrical jacket. Pros: great material that’s durable and comfortable, thoughtful features Cons: poor quality, flaws leading it to be u usable right out of the bag.

Great for high elevation and winds!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Started using this jacket this fall while constructing our house at 9300’ and it works great! It is very wind proof yet a breathable material. I like the way the hood sits around my neck and the length of the sleeves. I am 5’3” and the small is perfect for layering. The removable powder skirt is a nice touch. I am wondering about the durability of the zipper stopper but so far it seems tough. Can’t wait to try this out skiing!

Awesome jacket
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] There's so much I love about this jacket and the attention to detail in the design. It has a nice bit of stretch to it that makes it very comfortable. There are large pit zips for letting out heat. There's a pass pocket on the sleeve. When fully zipped up the inside is soft against the chin/face. I am 5'6" and 150lbs and the size large fits well with space to layer up underneath. I would describe the fit as a little boxy. In comparison to some other ski shells I own, this one is noticeably shorter in length which works great for me with a shorter torso, but this could be an issue for someone who is tall. Looking forward to using this jacket in the backcountry and resort this winter! I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review.

Initial Impressions
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am 5'3", 125lbs and tried on a x-small in agave deep woods. My background in gear use is primarily in a backcountry touring setting. I work as an avalanche educator and backcountry ski guide. I gave this jacket 4/5 stars instead of 5/5 because I feel this jacket is a little heavy and bulky for a ski tour jacket. However, this jacket does seem like it would shine in a resort setting due to the powder skirt and extensive pockets. Certainly a durable, well made jacket that I would trust in a rugged storm. This jacket would definitely keep you warm and dry. I appreciate the high, protective collar and large hood. Pockets are very spacious and plentiful. With two mesh pockets inside the jacket, two hand pockets on the outside, and one chest pocket. Full pit zips as well. Color is cute and stylish. Sleeves are long with plenty of space to fit over gloves. The torso is not too fitted, length is pretty standard, covering the butt. Comfy, wear all day type of jacket. Black Diamond gave me this free product to try in exchange for my honest review.
